Salmon running at 36-acre private fishing destination in Central New York
It’s salmon season at Salmon Acres, a private fishing resort in Central New York.
The 36-acre resort, owned and operated by the Oneida Indian Nation and Turning Stone Enterprises, offers 1,500 feet of private frontage along the Salmon River, a popular fishing destination 30 minutes from Syracuse, New York.
The property includes exclusive access to picturesque Clark Falls, the only waterfall on the entire river.
King, coho, and Atlantic salmon are among the fish running the river right now; historically the run builds gradually through September and is thick for most of October. Steelhead and brown trout also have been known to frequent the area, making the entire stretch one long honey hole.
“It’s one of the best places in all of Central New York to fish,” said Grant Goulart, director of recreation for Turning Stone Enterprises. “The fishing’s good, the scenery is beautiful, and it’s totally private.”
Guests have two ways to experience Salmon Acres: as day-trippers or overnight guests.
Day-use passes include access to the river from sunrise to sunset. These guests also can utilize Salmon Acres amenities such as picnic tables and grills.
Overnight guests can stay in one of 11 heated cabins—each cabin sleeps anywhere from three to six people comfortably. All the cabins have cable television and are stocked with linens and toiletries for the duration of a stay. Five of the cabins have full kitchens; the other six have kitchenettes. All overnight stays include river access from sunrise to sunset.
Many guests at Salmon Acres bring their own gear. The resort also rents gear such as waders and rods, as well as golf carts for those who need extra help getting around the property.
Goulart said one of the benefits to staying at Salmon Acres is the dedicated river access.
Public access stretches of the Salmon River in the nearby town of Pulaski are teeming with fishermen during most of the fall. At Salmon Acres, the fishing is totally private.
“Fishing here is like fishing at your own exclusive club,” he said. “Especially on weekends when people come from all over, the public areas of the river are so crowded you might think you’ll never catch a fish. Here, with us, you feel like you’ve got the entire river to yourself.”
Salmon Acres guests don’t only have private access to the river; they also have exclusive access to all 36 acres of the resort. In autumn, as leaves on the trees change color, the landscape explodes into vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange, and pink.
It’s a perfect backdrop for a fishing getaway you’ll remember forever.
